Quarter-Sized Mosquitos Plaguing Texas

Houston-area residents are experiencing one of the worst mosquito season in years thanks to heavy rain that has created the perfect breeding ground for the airborne pests. Officials are warning that the problem will only get worse as there is more rain in the forecast for the weekend.

Steve Campion, a reporter for ABC13, complained about the influx of mosquitoes on Twitter

Forgive me for the photos. I need to rant for a moment! While shooting a story in San Leon today, I can’t tell you how many mosquitos swarmed @13PhotogReed & me. Every time we hit one there was blood. What is going on?  I’ve never seen so many. Is anyone seeing this?

Residents said that not only are they seeing more of the annoying insects, the mosquitos are much larger than normal, with some being as large as a quarter.

To make matters worse, the Fort Bend County Health and Human Services Department reported that one person has tested positive for West Nile Virus. They pointed out that they have not found the virus in any mosquitos since August 10. They said they will spray for mosquitos twice a week as a precaution.

Officials stated that residents should go through their yards and dump out any standing water they find to eliminate the number of places the mosquitos can lay eggs.
